Ozel Turkbas on Youtube

Great to see this footage of Ozel Turkbas finally on "Youtube!"

My mother's first gig as a belly dancer was with Ozel at the Brittania. Marko Melkon Alemsherian was there on oud, Johanna adored Ozel's dancing-Ozel had two acts:a traditional one that ended with Karsilama and another one where she came out in different "layered" costumes-singing one song in Turkish, one in Greek, and one in Arabic. Each costume layer represented a different culture. As I said, Ozel was a big influence on Johanna. Ozel, Nejla Ates and another Turkish dancer named Shukran that played the Istanbul with Johanna were her biggest influences. Johanna is a major lover of "Karsilama"-is a fiery type person-and added Karsilama to her act as soon as she could. She said Ozel's Karsilama was gorgeous. Karsilama is not very popular now, but was then- Ozel, Saliha, Johanna and some other American dancers used it back then (early 60's)( Morocco and Serena did not add Karsilama to their acts until much later when they were into teaching and had dance groups, etc.)

A short bio of Ozel: Born in 1940, appeared in Ankara State Children's Theatre, did singing, acting, ballet, appeared in 14 movies, came to U.S. the first time in 1959, appeared in nightclubs here, appeared as "La Orientale" in the Dallas Civic Opera production of "Thais."

This particular video has more of an emphasis on the singer who is singing a novelty song-it's very cute and fun!. Wish it actually showed her doing more, but is great to see nevertheless! Maybe we will see more of her again. I hope so.

Belly dance in the 70's compared to now

I know there was a belly dance craze in the 70's when everyone and their grandmother was belly dancing. How does that belly dance boom compare to today? Is it bigger now or then. Does it seem bigger because of the technology? What was it like then. I would love to hear from those of you that were there in the scene.

A Word on Sword Dancing

"Beauty is power; a smile is its sword." - John Ray

Female sword dancing, or Raks al sayf, was not widespread in the Middle East. Men in Egypt performed a dance called el ard, a martial arts dance involving upraised swords, but women were not widely known to use swords as props during their dancing in public. However, paintings and engravings of the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme (who visited Egypt in the 18th century) show sword dancers balancing sabers on their head. Sword dancing, (Raqs al Saïf) is widespread in Turkey, Pakistan-India and Iran.

Women dancing with swords is an ancient skill in North Africa. Bedouin dancers of the Sahara dance in honor of their husbands. Some tribes had sword dancers at their wedding to bring good luck. The dancer is untouchable by other men. This ritual dance had psychic consequences: A married female sword dancer who was unfaithful to her husband lost everything, including her dancing skills.

"Never give a sword to a man who can’t dance." - Confucius

Biggest BD star of the 1980s

So I was a mere infant but I was just curious.

I was noticing that most of the BD lit I find is published post 1990s or 1970s so I was wondering what was going down in the 1980s for belly dancers. What was the hottest trend, hugest performer, sought after music, "the thing to do", place to learn - that kind of thing.

So for all of you who were there-
take a trip down memory lane:
what was it like being a belly dancer in the 80s?

Hi Shems!!! My eyes popped out of my head when I saw her picture!! This is what I know about her.......she was a very popular teacher and performer in the early 70's...she may have started in California, but she ended up here in Portland, OR! She is from Jordan, and she was the gorgeous Nemra Khan's instructor....from what I hear, she's in her 70's now and living in Lake Oswego! I would give anything to learn more about her and see more pictures, too!!! She was beautiful!!

Turkish Greek Gypsy Karsilama from Aziza Al-Tawil

Hey Everyone!,

We were just talking about Ozel Turkbas on the other post and I mentioned her karsilama skills.

I just shot a short clip of me doing Karsilama last night and posted to youtube today. I invite everyone to look at my blog which gives the full story behind the vintage music I used.

The standards in Greektown NYC clubs were so high. The foreign girls that came over in the heyday were the cream of the crop and the music-God-the music was sensational! It was hard to be a lousy dancer with music like that. if it didn't move you-you were dead!

If any of you remember or have heard of this group, they are back in business. There is a new CD out called "Play your Cymbals" and I really love it. They also have a new tribe moderated by Askin.

It is confusing when I tell my students about this music because when I say that it is the traditional style that I learned belly dance with it sounds like the music is old fashioned. That is not true. As soon as I started playing the CD I felt my body respond to the music just as it did to the original Sultan's albums (yes I still have them on vinyl except for one which I have on cassette tape, and all have been converted to digital and are in my iTunes library as well as transferred to CDs).

Why not check them out?

Folks,

A while back (and 2 computers ago), I recall stumbling upon a website that featured some fabulous old, vintage photos of belly dancers and people portraying belly dancers (i.e. Doris Day, etc.) in old films. Would anyone out there know which site I'm talking about and might be able to provide a link?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

"Legends" events - Massachusetts

Greetings,

Just wanted to let you all know about some upcoming events that you may be interested in attending:

August 8th, Taunton, MA - "House of Shimmy" - traditionally a venue to introduce new dancers to performing to live music, our hostess, Aurel, has graciously given over the venue to some fundraising efforts for the documentary. :-) Music is provided by the Leon Manoogian Ensemble, and it includes none other than John Berberian and Harry Bedrosian. Our dancers that evening include none other than Kasim, Kanina, and a cameo by the fabulous Adonna!!! Your ticket price includes buffet dinner. There will be a raffle featuring some great "Legends" related items, including a Jemela Omar skirt and great old music. See www.ancientartstudios.com for more info.

August TBD - Athenian Corner, Lowell, MA - Our film crew will be there to get footage of the fabulous house band one evening in August (probably on a Thursday). Of course, that band includes Freddie Elias, Costas Manitokas, and Mike Gregian. We want a lively house that night! Ping me offline if you want more info, or to be updated as we get more details.

Nile zils were made by a musician named Ed Mekjian (I think) back in the 60s and 70s. Any dancer who was anyone had a pair.

documentary

Greetings!

I'm glad to have found this tribe. I publish a magazine and Web site (www.bellydancenewengland.com) for the New England Middle-Eastern music and dance community. I've always been interested in our local history - George Abdo, Mike Sarkissian, Morocco (not the one from NYC!), Artie Barsamian - it's a rich history indeed.

I'm collaborating on a documentary about this very subject with a Cambride-based media company, Interlock Media (www.interlockmedia.com). A summary of the film:

"Aziza!" is a new documentary profiling the history of belly dance in the Boston area as it has evolved and thrived over the past century within various local ethnic groups including the Armenian, Lebanese, and Greek communities that have settled here since the early 1900s. This documentary presents a unique perspective on how music and dance has played a crucial role in the immigrant experience of these communities, and how belly dance - a fringe ethnic art form - eventually gained popularity in mainstream America.

This tribe might be the right place to put out this request. We are in the pre-production phase and are just beginning our research. We are looking for historical material on the Boston belly dance scene - photos, film and video footage, articles, show recordings - from the 1950s - 80s. We are especially interested in talking with anyone who was a regular club goer in those days, to get the audience perspective. If anyone here has such material, or knows of someone who might be able to help, please email me at info@bellydancenewengland.com.

I'll also just put it out there - while we're going for grant money, we need seed money for the next 4-5 months to bring the production staff on board. If anyone might be interested in donating or investing, please email me at info@bellydancenewengland.com.

Thanks so much! I'll post periodic updates here, if anyone is interested.

Hello again. Does anyone have any information on this record label, or know anyone who might? It was a major producer of belly dance music in the 50s and 60s, including LPs by Artie Barsamian and John Berberian. Our production assistants are searching the dry, dusty archives of state government, but I thought I'd give this group a try, as well.

I cannot find any valid information online about it. Any one know about it, or does anyone know any resources i can go to?

www.eddiekochak.com/index.htm

Eddie Kocak created a genre known as "Ameribaba" ~ a collection of Arabic/Armenian/Turkish/Greek tunes with a unique "over here" rather than "over there" feel. He played a major role in the NYC music and dance scene. Often he would name songs after his favorite dancers. Many of those NYC dancers such as Ibrihim Farrah, Phaedra, Jemela Omar and Saroya Melik to name a few, graced the covers of his albums.

"Sahara City" Nightclub, Egypt

Well, I enjoyed so much the bio of Norma Warah's mentor Princess Madiha. Ironically, I just heard the latest about the "Sahara City" night club Madiha performed in many years ago. When my Dad Samir Al-Tawil was teaching at the University in Cairo back in the 1970's he performed at "Sahara City." One of my sisters went to Egypt on holiday just a few months back and related to me that she went in search of Sahara City. The cab driver was an older man and told her that it had closed, but he knew where it had been so he took her there. The experience was touching for her. She told me that now most of the belly dancing is in the five star hotels and that the old type night clubs are gone. Most of the bars are the seedy kind hidden away now. In other words there's not much "in between" right now.

My mother Johanna and I thought that the name "Sahara City" was very romantic, invoking memories of the fez, "Casablanca," and so on. Too bad my sister could not go in. She was going to try to book me to dance there! Alas....it is not to be!

When did Egyptian dancers start having a bedlah? The story I heard was that it was Westerners having the harem fantasy, creating the bra/belt set, and having that re-adopted in the Middle East... What have you heard/learned?

Spinoff from Feenjon: Greektown in America

Belly dance scene was an "international scene" and that is why it was so exciting!

Very true Aziza. It truly was international. When I was working in Greektown in Detroit it was so much fun. Greektown was considered a tourist destination and we used to get busloads of tourists. There were always 2 shows. The first show was the "American show". This show was for the tourists. There were always 2 belly dancers and 2 singers, male and female. One of the singers would be an international singer that could sing in several languages: Greek, Armenian, Israeli, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, etc. The band would play songs such as Aziza, Mustapha, Never on Sunday, Ta Mavra Matia Sou, Lawrence of Arabia, Blue Spanish Eyes, etc.

The second show was more "Greek". Now we started getting into the more traditional Greek songs. The music became more sentimental. The Greeks would close up their shops in Greektown and come to the bouzouki clubs. Also on their days off, the Arabic musicians would come down too. Often a derbke player would be invited to play for the belly dancer.

The clubs were open 6-7 days a week. All the musicians and dancers from the Arabic clubs would come to Greektown on their days off. It really was a party and family atmosphere. It was like Cheers, in a way. It was home. Greektown was considered THE place to work for belly dancers as the pay was higher. However the best dancers were usually the ones that were proficient and skilled in Arabic music. That's why so many "Greek" songs were really revamped Arabic songs. And the style of dancing was a blend of American Caberet, Raks Sharqi, Turkish.....It's so hard when I try to describe the style to someone who has never seen it. I'm hoping in my upcoming Chicago workshop to shed some light on the subject but nothing is like experiencing it firsthand.

Alas, the last Greek supper club in Detroit closed in 1997 and just last week, a famous Greek restaurant that had been around for 108 years closed it doors.

I know Chicago still has a Greektown although they haven't had belly dancers since at least the mid to late 80's.

Any other Greektown's in America still thriving?

When my mother's dance company "Oasis" played the "Mahrajan" in the sixties there was a sensational, talented Arabic girl of about ten years old who was on the bill. If our old color slides of the event have not deteriorated we may have a picture of her one day. You could tell from the pictures even that she was great-had great style, etc. This event was held in Marlton NJ. Her name was "Sultona."

I wonder if Lee Ali or someone from that general vicinity would know if she kept dancing?

Let us know!

Hope someone can help here..I am on a search for a pc. of music Boddy Farrah used in one of his weeklong workshops in NYC..I think early 90's..The music was a nice melodic musically traditional oriental pc, with a funky jazz like passage. The choreography had a section of 2 to 4 sets of barrel turns using a veil. the music at that time was only on cassette tape if that helps with the time line.

Part of musicians name may have been somehting like Basoudi.

For the longest time I kept that cassett in a sfa eplace and since moveing a few years ago have not been able to come across itr.

Any leads would be so appreciated!
60's Greek Singer-Looking For.....

I would like to ask any belly dancers from the 1960's era in NY to try to help me figure out the identity of a Greek female singer that lived in the Bronx and worked the "Istanbul" nightclub around 1967.

The woman is rumored to have given birth to twin boys.

If anyone has any inkling of who this might be, please send me a message through "Tribe."

I found my sister Renee' two years ago through website of my mother's old friend Eddie Kochak. She was on a lifelong search for any siblings we may have. (Our father was oud player Samir Al-Tawil). My beloved sister Renee' was killed in a car accident two weeks ago in Indiana. I am going to continue our search on my behalf and our sister Marta. It will be bittersweet. A tribute to Renee' is in my blog on my page. Any info on this Greek singer would be appreciated.

Thank you.
Aziza Al-Tawil

Fazil's Studio NYC: Last Dance by Jennifer Dunning New York Times

The places where cultural history was made in New York City have largely disappeared, and on Friday another institution was lost. Fazil’s Times Square Studio closed after 73 years as a ramshackle, homey rehearsal center that served as a mecca for everyone from movie stars to struggling tap, flamenco and Middle Eastern dancers.

Anne Tyus, a dancer who has been coming to the studio since the 1960s, shared goodbyes with Fazil Cengiz on Thursday. More Photos »
The rates were cheap. Even penniless artists could afford to rent there. In Studio A-4 — one of 14 rehearsal rooms in the three-floor center on Eighth Avenue, between 46th and 47th Streets in Clinton — dancers for many years paid 25 cents to spend an entire day working in the studio that was affectionately known as “the snake pit.”

“As many as could fit in,” said Fazil Cengiz (pronounced FAY-zil cen-GEEZ), a languid former owner and driver of taxis who bought the center in 1978. “The only rule was that you couldn’t bring a blanket and sleep there.”

Bill Irwin, the performance artist, was at Fazil’s on Thursday, its last day, rehearsing a new show for the Philadelphia Theater Company. “It’s very sad around here,” he said. “We’re all saying goodbye to each other.”

Mr. Irwin recalled that he fell in love with the unusual atmosphere of the place from the start. “I first walked up the stairs in 1978 or ’79, to take tap class with Brenda Bufalino,” he said. “The place was clouded with cigarette smoke. Some of the old tap dancers wouldn’t talk to each other.” They’d shut the studio door, Mr. Irwin said, so that other tappers would not steal their steps.

That studio, the spacious A-1, became known as the Copasetics Room, named after the ensemble of august tap stars, including Honi Coles and Charles Cook, who gathered there. It was the only studio with a working piano, though the old hoofers tended to sing out accompaniment.

Fazil’s was first known as Michael’s, owned by a former wrestler who taught acrobatics, tap and ballroom dance. No one seemed to know his last name, though he was immortalized in the 1948 film musical “Easter Parade” when Fred Astaire invites Judy Garland to run over to Michael’s and go through some steps. The center’s next owner was Jerry LeRoy, a vaudevillian whose specialty was tap dancing in ice skates, who renamed it after himself.

From the start, tap, flamenco and Middle Eastern dancers thronged there, as well as Broadway hoofers. By the late 1950s, Alvin Ailey was teaching there. Countless workshops and rehearsals for Broadway musicals were held at the studios. And a gangly youth named Savion Glover honed his tap style by jamming with members of the Copasetics and continued to rehearse there as his career flourished.

“The floors really had history,” said Jane Goldberg, a tap solo performer. “Those were the best-sounding floors in the city.”

Fazil’s was full of unexpected nooks and legends. “Upstairs there was a bar where there were belly dancing performances,” Ms. Goldberg said. “I don’t think it even had a name. You just knew about it.” An ancient seamstress named Chiquita who made affordable costumes for regulars in B-4, the center’s smallest room, was said to be the model for the Chiquita Banana girl.

Soledad Barrio, of Noche Flamenca, taught there, along with flamenco artists like Mariano Parra and Maria Alba, a fiery performer who taught the ballerina Gelsey Kirkland at Fazil’s.

“Everyone who comes from Spain goes to Fazil’s,” said Isabel Soler, a director of the Danzas Españolas company. “I got Maria Alba’s locker. Such ghosts there. I cried like a baby my last time there.”

Rap and hip-hop stars also found their way to Fazil’s, among them Missy Elliott. “She was such a sweetheart,” said Serpil Civan, the studios’ office manager, an ethnic dancer who is Mr. Cengiz’s sister.

Something of Fazil’s will live on in scenes in the movies filmed there, among them Woody Allen’s “Broadway Danny Rose” and Nick Castle’s “Tap.” Gregory Hines, a fixture at Fazil’s, modeled Sonny’s, the hoofers’ hangout in “Tap,” after Studio A-1. When Fazil’s received a move-out date from its landlord in July, work began on “And 5, 6, 7, 8 ...,” a documentary about the studio by the filmmaker Timur Civan, Ms. Civan’s son.

The building is one of several on the block slated for demolition to make way for new construction. Ms. Civan said the fine old maple floor in Studio A-1 would be lifted and cut into pieces, to be distributed to Fazil’s habitués as souvenirs. During a Christmas party last year that ran well into the next morning, Mr. Cengiz insisted that everyone sign the walls of Studio A-1 before leaving.

He discovered the place in 1971, when he began picking up Elena Lentini, a Middle Eastern dancer and his longtime companion, after rehearsals. Mr. Cengiz had grown up in a dancing family of Turkish descent and soon found himself taking tap and ballroom classes there.

That was the effect the studio had. “The kinds of people I met there opened my eyes to other worlds of dance,” Ms. Soler said.

Fazil’s still has a branch in Istanbul, in an old building where posters for Turkish movies were once printed. After exhaustive searching, Mr. Cengiz has found one possible new space in Manhattan, but he said it was not ideal. One problem has been the largely unearned reputation of flamenco and tap dancers for tearing up floors with their thundering feet.

“Where are the flamencos going to go?” he fretted. “Nobody wants them.”

Art from the '80's

Does anyone remember an artist who did calendars, note cards and t-shirts from the 1980's? The artist signature is pretty tiny on the pieces I have (not to mention my eyes are not so good as they were then) but it looks like "Ami" or possibly "Jami" and the calendar pages are trademarked to a "J. McGuire".
The drawings look like pen and ink (almost like coloring book pages) with very sweet looking dancers and simple backgrounds.
I have tried "google-ing" with no success and don't know what else to try. If anyone has a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated

Jamila Salimpour is credited with (among many other things) developing vocabulary and format to teach the ancient art of belly dance in a classroom setting. She trained innumerable dancers in the 1960's and 70's. This was the first wave of students to learn in this structured format. The vocabulary and steps still echo throughout belly dance classes here and abroad.

Here are Two articles:

Bal Anat, the West Coast dance troupe that inspired the Tibal Dance Movement

A speech by Jamila Salimpour at a MED conference 1997:
http://www.therealsuhaila.com/Pages/Articles/dance_conference.pdf

Jamila produced an amazing instructional CD for Finger Cymbal playing:

also a 4 dvd archive series of some of the movements she has taught over the years:

as well as few manuals on Finger Cymbal playing, dance vocabulary and history:

Jamila is still teaching on Saturday mornings in El Cerrito, California.

Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca Mugs, Journals, Tile Coasters, etc.

Hi all! Just wanted to announce a new Cafepress store with a scene of Tahia Carioca dancing from her movie, Shatie el-Gharam, the Shore of Love. Items available there with her image include mugs, a journal, tile coasters, a wall clock for your dance studio, notecards, and more. You can find it at:

http://www.cafepress.com/shoreoflove

Also, here's a reminder of an existing store with a scene of Samia Gamal and Farid al-Atrache from the movie Afrita Hanem, the Genie Lady. You can find this one at:

http://www.cafepress.com/afritahanem

If you're curious to see what other Cafepress shops I have, a full list is at www.shira.net/shopping.htm

These Cafepress shops, as well as the Amazon-based bookstore, video store, and music store at the above link are the sole source of funding that pays for the Shira.net web site to exist. I incur several hundred dollars every year in expenses for hosting fees, software upgrades, etc., and these shops generate the income needed to pay for all that. My web site couldn't exist without the support of everyone who buys my merchandise. So, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has purchased something from my shops in the past!

Dance and Islam

Hello Everyone,

My question regards dance and Islam. First and foremost, I hope I do not offend anyone...this is purely to gain knowledge in regards to dance, Islam, inter-cultural norms and transitions as well as transnationalism. In other words, how has feelings and beliefs concerning dance changed? How has it changed in regards to religion and changing times? How has it changed in regards to living in different countries? Etc. Specifically my questions are:

*How is dance viewed within Islam? (Historically? Today? In the future?)
*How is dance viewed in terms of women within Islam?
*Dance as transnational, trans-cultural discourse…your views?

There are no right or wrong answers so please feel free to explore this as I am doing the same. Thank you!

Blessings,
Laura

Carla Lopez, aka Zaida, aka Khadija al-Nakhla

Carla Lopez was a dancer at the Bagdad, according to Aziza!'s Tales of North Beach on the Gilded Serpent... She danced in San Francisco for several years before moving to New York where she taught classes. Texas-based dancer Z-Helene mentions Carla as one of her most influential instructors (she also mentions Bobby Farrah, Anahid Sofian, and Elena Lentini) Today, Carla is no longer dancing, is married (to her second husband, a Turkish man), and living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

My mother discovered that her cousin, Carla Lopez, was a belly dancer back in the 1970s, had performed at the United Nations, and specialized in the Turkish style. At a family get together, my mother met Carla, and this is in fact the same Carla Lopez mentioned in Aziza!'s article. I had no idea there was another dancer in the family, let alone another professional. When my mother showed Carla my business card, Carla responded with, "How did she learn Turkish dance?" My mother replied that I learned on the East Coast, and Carla responded, "Ahhh... that makes sense because there's very little Turkish here."

I've always felt a connection to both the Turkish-American styles that came out of New York, as well as the dancers of San Francisco that can be traced through the Jamila Salimpour "line". Now I know I have a relative who is very connected to both!

Was in in upstate NY recently and reminisced about the golden age of the "resorts" that proliferated in the Catskill Mountains serving up heaps of entertainment to vacationers from the city.

Belly dancers who worked the resorts had to ride between gigs still dressed in their costumes which was usually under a raincoat. They worked very hard because they usually got a whole weeks work done in one night. My mother's friend Midge (who performed with a snake named Sami) loved working the Catskills. One of the best agents for the resorts was Charlie Rapp. He is still remembered to this day and my Mom Johanna was one of his acts. Johanna preferred working in Greektown (six nights a week) over the Catskills, but she did go up occasionally. (Johanna thought she'd freeze her butt off in Catskills! Ha Ha!)

Sabah Nissan used to like a gig she had at an Armenian resort way up in the Tannersville area which was a part of the area they now refer to as the "Yogurt Belt." (The "Borscht Belt" was the area around Liberty/Monticello, etc. etc. Was founded by European Jews, thus that name.)

I'd like to invite Sabah to tell us a little about Tannersville (what happened to that place, etc.) if she'd like to join in to this post.

Also, I have a question about a place I came across in Liberty, NY. There was a dilapidated old sign falling down at Lake Marie Rd. that said, "Persian Garden" with an arrow pointing the way. I made my boyfriend go in search of it and a few miles out we found an old resort (two beige color 150 year old looking rooming houses!) and even a boat house that matched. It was long abandoned. Does anyone know if that was Armenian or has anyone even ever heard of "The Persian Garden"?

Excerpt from bio on website: http://www.aisha-ali.com/bio.html

Aisha Ali is an internationally recognized authority on the dances of Egypt and North Africa. Following her successes in the United States, she performed widely in Europe and the Middle East. For over twenty years she directed her folkloric ensemble, the Aisha Ali Dance Company.
In 1971, Aisha traveled to the Middle East to observe firsthand many traditional styles of dance not seen in the United States. She made subsequent visits to Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia from 1973 to 1997 to document folkloric materials that were fast disappearing. As a result, she has released numerous audio and video recordings.

Aisha has an awesome photo gallery of vintage photos of the pioneers on the west coast and more.

Shems, you've posted some WONDERFUL photos to this tribe showing Egyptian dancers from the early 20th century! Did you find these in a reference book somewhere? If so, I'd love to know where so I can get a copy for myself! Internet photos are nice, and I'm so glad you shared them, but I still love the feel of a nice, beautiful book in my hands...

From Eric Petersons Blog:

Well-loved Boston musician Roger Krikorian sadly passed away August 10, 2007 and will be missed very much.
Roger was a main fixture in the Middle Eastern music scene in Boston for many years, a well respected person in the Armenian community as well as in music.
I met Roger for the first time earlier this summer when he let me sit in with his band at St. James Armenian church picnic. It was pure joy to play this music as it touches me very deeply. Roger was a very nice person to meet and I enjoyed playing music with him very much that day.
Thank you Roger Krikorian for all that you gave to many people for many years.
May your soul always be divine.

I have just been informed that Serena Wilson passed away last night after a short stay at a hospital. She was a legendary dancer who helped shaped our dance scene in the East Coast. For those of us who had the chance to know her and study and study with her the loss hits very close to home. I feel like I lost a family member.

Ibrahim Farrah's "Rare Glimpses" now available on DVD!!

(Paraphrasing Nina Costanza's DVD notes here...)

"...the entire DVD is designed to illustrate the dance in historical and stylistic evolution as it moves from the archival film of Fatima (1897), the Coney Island dancer and controversial performer at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, to culminate in a contemporary style, classical oriental finale by the legendary Nadia Gamal. In between, the viewer is taken to the village of Goulimime, Morocco (1950) to witness a real, breathtaking Guedra, followed by Mr. Farrah's choreographed rendition of the Guedra (1975) and performed with eloquent emotional intensity by Jajouka (1994), and then to 1971, Lebanon, where we are invited through Mr. Farrah's personal filming to experience a vivacious family of Bedouin Gypsies executing movements and naturalness of feeling that we can 'rarely glimpse' anywhere today."

Approximate running time 1 hour. The DVD is $50 plus shipping and may be ordered directly from Phaedra -- fefecoed (at) hotmail (dot) com.

I derive no benefit from the sale of these DVDs... but I hope everyone will buy them, to give Bobby more of the recognition he deserves!

Mahmoud Reda in eastern Iowa July 27-29, 2007

Date & Time: Friday, July 27, 2007 - Sunday, July 29, 2007
Location: Ballantyne Auditorium (Saturday/Sunday only)
6301 Kirkwood Blvd. SW
Cedar Rapids, Iowa view map
More Info: 319-354-9638
Web site: http://www.kahramandance.org/Mahmoud_Reda_Web_Flyer.htm

Mahmoud Reda will return to the Iowa City area on July 27-29, 2007 to teach workshops in Egyptian dance. The event includes:

* Early bird arrivals: showing of the Reda movie Gharam fi al-Karnak with English subtitles on Thursday evening
* A hafla Friday night featuring performances by workshop attendees (some professionals, some students)
* Workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday
* A show of entirely professional dancers on Saturday night

The workshops will be held in an air-conditioned facility.

For those not familiar with Mahmoud Reda, he was the founder of an entire performing art in Egypt, that of the theatrical presentation of folkloric dance. He founded Reda Troupe in 1959, starred in several movies that also featured his choreography, and became known as Egypt's greatest choreographer.

Even if you normally dance barefoot, be sure to wear either dance shoes or socks to this workshop to protect the soles of your feet and your knees. Reda's dance style involves a large amount of spins, Arabesques, and other pivoting moves, and your feet need to be able to pivot freely without sticking to the floor.

I have tried to dig information about gorgeous Nadia Gamal from Internet but without much results. Does anybody know any good site about her: I would love to write an article about her dancing to our local dance magazine but without backgroud the task seems to be almost impossible...

Bio excerpt from

Originally trained in ballet and modem dance, she has been involved in the middle eastern field for over thirty years and has excelled in many areas - as performer, choreographer, teacher and producer. Self-trained by observing and working with the Turkish, Greek and Arabic dancers in New York's famous "Greektown" nightclubs of the Sixties, Ms Sofian was one of the pioneers in taking oriental dance out of the nightclub milieu and onto the concert stage. She has performed both as soloist and with her company in a wide range of settings including the Museum of Modem Art sculpture garden, the United Nations, the Unis Theatre on Broadway the original Dick Cavett TV Show, and Carnegie Hall, and was the first oriental dancer to be accepted into the prestigious New York Dance Festival at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park.

Need Points of Contact for Habibi Magazine Back Issues Given Away

Hello! I am looking for people in Eugene, Oregon (or willing to come to Eugene) who are interested in being Points of Contact for dancers who are out of the area. I have to get rid of all the back issues of Habibi. There are are thousands of magazines and over ten years of Habibi Magazine are represented in these boxes. This includes the issues published by Shareen el Safy and Jennifer James-Long, from the early '90's until 2006. They new owner in New York City cannot ship and store them and so they are still in Eugene, OR and I have been instructed to recycle them. I cannot bring myself to simply put them in a recycle bin when I've known this magazine since I was a little kid, then owned and published it myself.

I do not want anyone to make money off of the magazines. I feel that this is one of the most important aspects of the give-away process. Since leftovers are going to end up in a recycle bin, they should be distributed to as many people within the dance community as possible.

THERE ARE RULES TO THE GIVEAWAY. SO PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POSTING.

DATE: June 2nd and 3rd (Saturday & Sunday)
TIME: 9am-5pm Saturday, 9am - 3pm Sunday
PLACE: 620 Horn Lane, Eugene, OR
Google Link: maps.google.com/maps m=1
NOTE: Do not come early!

I am posting this on Bhuz, but I would also like to see someone post this message in its entirety on the MED list, Tribe, and any other relevant place to get the word out.

I understand that being in Oregon means that I am far away from most of the bellydance community. The other complication is that I don't have the time to organize and ship magazines to everyone who wants them. So I have devised a way to distribute them in the fairest way I can think of.

FOR LOCAL PEOPLE WHO CAN COME TO EUGENE:

- I will allow people, who come in-person, to take ONE ISSUE OF EACH MAGAZINE for themselves. I will put your name on a tablet when you arrive.

- If you want to bring an email from a friend, and not be a major Point of Contact, that is okay.

- If you are going to be able to come to Eugene and would like to be a "Point of Contact" for other people far away, you need to post your intention on this thread on Bhuz so people far away can contact you. Please include your 1. name and 2. email and 3. the day & time you will come to the giveaway so people far away can decide who to contact. Obviously there will be more magazines to chose from on Saturday than on Sunday.

If you are a Point of Contact, come to me on that weekend with:
1. The email(s) from out of town folks, and make sure the 4 points are included in each letter (see below)
2. Enough space in your car to accommodate the magazines
3. Boxes to hold the magazines for each person. A complete set would fill a 15" x 11" base box that is 10-12 inches high. The large format magazines that Shareen printed is the reason the box base has to be so big.

FOR PEOPLE TOO FAR AWAY OR TOO BUSY TO COME IN PERSON:

- If you cannot come in person, you can send an email to a Point of Contact -- someone who is going to be there. They will bring an email on behalf of you. This note will entitle you to one copy of each available issue of the magazine. You will have to coordinate the box and shipping with the person picking up your magazines.

- I will keep a printed copy of your email. This will help make sure that no-one uses more than one contact person to get more magazines than allowed. Like I said, my purpose is to get the magazines into as many hands as possible.

- If you are sending an email to a local Point of Contact, please include:
1. Your legal name
2. Your dance name
3. Your mailing address
4. Your phone number (in case we have question while collecting your magazines)
5. The magazine issues you want (who was on the cover, or the number of the issue is fine).
6. Note: please expect to pay your Point of Contact for both the box and the shipping

There is one issue of the magazine that I will not be stingy with. I have over 1,000 copies of it! So I may throw an extra issue or two into your mix so you can give it to friends if you want to.

Any left over copies of the magazine will be recycled. So please PASS THE WORD and hopefully we won't have to do that.

As I conclude this message, I only feel that I need to emphasize that this kind of giveaway will never happen again with Habibi, and these issues will never be printed again. So please take special care of the ones you get. There are generations of dancers in the future who will benefit from their contents. They truly are collectors items at this point and it's sad to see the end of them. You will be able to look back and remember the debates, the issues, and what a uproar it caused when Kathy Smith was put on the cover.

I look forward to the opportunity to touch base with those of you who do come. You can come bid farewell to this magazine that many of us have known for 33 years.

If you want to stick around and have a potluck, we might be able to arrange this if there is enough interest and schedules aren't too crazy. Let's discuss it.

Please drop me a message if you have questions.

Excellent DVD. There is so much interesting info on this DVD about Oum Khoulsoum that I never knew. I never knew she had a rivalry with Mohammed al Waheb or how much her singing was tied to the politics of the time.

The best part is that the few song clips they have of her have English subtitles.

Nadia Gamal

I was browsing through youtube last night and came across this demo of Nadia.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=nadia+gamal

I actually own the VHS tape but hadn't watched it in years. I shook off the dust and was amazed all over again. You can really see how she has influenced the modern Lebanese belly dancing and especially Amani. In fact at the end of the tape Nadia does a drum solo with Setrak which is the same music for the famous Amani Drum Solo. Nadia however does only the beginning. Nadia also does her famous Bonanza galloping horse step which was later copied by Nariman Aboud.

I don't think Nadia's style is as graceful and elegant as many Eygptian dancers but there is no disputing her energy and the power she packed in her shimmy.

I believe this performance was one of her last before she died. Nadia is older and I swear she wears one of the most ugliest costumes I ever saw in the second half. But you can see the love the people had for her.

"Habeeba began performing in 1960, and began instructing in 1971 when she created Habeeba's Dance of the Arts, Inc. Hers was the first belly dance school in Ohio and she is an inductee in the American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Hall of Fame".

I've collected random photos off the internet and about, some of which might be of interest here. I was wondering if I should post them? I can't remember where I gathered them all from anymore, so I don't know if I will violate any rights by showing them here. I guess we can just delete them if there is a complaint? The other thing is, I'm not 100% sure of the who and when of all the photos. So you think I should just post em, and y'all can help with IDs and the like?

X-Post: Alternate name for this song or the original composer?

On the Amani and the Badawist CD there is a song titled "Kamar we Noujoum" (or El-Qamar wu el-Nojoum...or anyone of a gadjillion transliterations similar to one of these.)

I seem to think, though, that I have another version of this song (or parts)...probably older...on another CD, but that it might have been under a different name. I knew what it was at one point, but have now forgotten. I have far too many CDs to count...don't know where to begin.

Does anyone know an alternate name/song using this melody or know the original composer? Or know for sure that I'm just nuts?

Thanks!

Soheyr Zaki club performance video?

Some years ago I was given a video of Soheyr dancing in a nightclub. She begins the show in gold and green/black
bedleh, and has a couple of costume changes, one into a nice shiny snug beledi dress with a black and gold striped belt - the stripes go
on the diagonal. She does cane in this, a nice drum solo, and finishes the show with Saudi style.

I thought this was filmed in Cairo but recently heard it was actually in L.A. or somewhere in California, if not L.A.

I'd like to learn anything anyone can share about this video.

Vintage belly dance laserdisc on ebay

Here is a link to the ebay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150077895373

It's for a laserdisc from 1982 that contains belly dance instruction. I already have one, which is why I don't mind sharing the link here. Unfortunbately, I don't (yet) have a laserdisc player, so I haven't had an opportunity to watch it. If anybody wants to know more detail about what it contains, I can post some of the text from the back cover - let me know if you want me to.

The cover claims that it features 4 dancers. Someone else who has seen this tells me that the primary instructor is Marta Schill, and that it also shows John Bilezikjian on-screen.

Primary & Secondary Course Materials (DVD, CD, Reference Manual) Available

Hello, Everyone....

I've just finished the Course Materials for the Primary and Secondary Course (sausanacademy.com/suq.htm) - $35/each. Please note that these are Course Materials and are assembled for use with the dance course corresponding to the level course material taught at the Sausan Academy of Egyptian Dance.

Although the movement that is being taught for that week is not broken down by yours truly in the DVD, it is, nevertheless, a demonstration of the dance movement by an actual bona fide Egyptian Dancer who was/is celebrated during her lifetime in movies and where ever she worked. This course material also serves to introduce these celebrated Egyptian Dancers to the up and coming next generation of belly dancer, so that they will know where we got this beautiful dance expression.

Each DVD contains movement examples by the following dancers:

Katie
Na'eema Akef
Nagwa Fouad
Samia Gamal
Samiha Tawfiq
Suhair Zaki
Taheyia Karioka
Zinaat Alouie
Zizi Moustafa

Each DVD demonstrates and categorizes ALL dance movement according to the Sausan Academy™ of Egyptian Dance and within the Egyptian Dance Code®.

Although they are best used for my dance courses, after a long time thinking about it and some encouragement from some supporters, I've made them available to the public for curiosity sake as well as educational purposes.

Also, if you take a look at my Tribe page, I've put up a very short movie showing all the Egyptian dance DVDs I have available right now. However, it will continue to be upgraded as I add more footage to the DVD collection.

Thanks for all of your support and thanks for allowing me to post this message. :-)

In Honor of Johanna's 79th B-Day December 16th! (Belated!)

I just now got this scanning thing figured out! Johanna turned 79 on December 16th, also Beethoven's B-Day. He is her favorite classical composer and she has always been honored. Her tambourine was already an antique in the 60's, with stunning mother of pearl inlay.

She was known for her spirited Turkish Karsilama with this instrument.

Happy Birthday and Happy New Year Mama! Love, Aziza

Research into the Source of modern bellydance

Hi Everyone,

I am passionate about bellydance but I don't feel like I know enough about its origins and leaders in the development of the dance to now.

I am the type of girl who needs to know where I am coming from in order to know where I am going :)

Where should I begin to look for understanding the dance from the inside out? Where and who do I start with? Who are the main "teachers" from the original dance and sources in the Middle East? Why are they so important? Are there books? Are there documentaries?

Any help is so appreciated and thanks so much!!!

early 'Tribal'? dancer (x-post)

Hey all, I've been cleaning out some of my old mags, and found a Habibi from 1975.
The cover shows a dancer wearing a big ol' tassel belt and Turkmen/Afghani cuffs.
The rest of the costume is 70's nightclub gear. Hard to see from the old pic what the skirt/pants are, but it looks heavy.
No idea who she is. Old BalAnat? pre-tribal?
The caption says it's taken at 'The Bold Knight Restaurant during a folk and belly dance party.
I'll try an scan the pic and post it.
I just thought it was interesting in that is shows Tribal- Cab fusion.

Hi, I have a bunch of old Habibi Mags. from Vol 1and 2 (a few) to 13. They date from the early 70's thru the 80'2. Lots of old pics, ads, articles etc.
I also have a LOT of old belly dance lp's.

My question - would anybody want this stuff, or should i toss them out? If someone did want to buy them, what would i ask?
Thanks!
