Great to see this footage of Ozel Turkbas finally on "Youtube!"

My mother's first gig as a belly dancer was with Ozel at the Brittania. Marko Melkon Alemsherian was there on oud, Johanna adored Ozel's dancing-Ozel had two acts:a traditional one that ended with Karsilama and another one where she came out in different "layered" costumes-singing one song in Turkish, one in Greek, and one in Arabic. Each costume layer represented a different culture. As I said, Ozel was a big influence on Johanna. Ozel, Nejla Ates and another Turkish dancer named Shukran that played the Istanbul with Johanna were her biggest influences. Johanna is a major lover of "Karsilama"-is a fiery type person-and added Karsilama to her act as soon as she could. She said Ozel's Karsilama was gorgeous. Karsilama is not very popular now, but was then- Ozel, Saliha, Johanna and some other American dancers used it back then (early 60's)( Morocco and Serena did not add Karsilama to their acts until much later when they were into teaching and had dance groups, etc.)

A short bio of Ozel: Born in 1940, appeared in Ankara State Children's Theatre, did singing, acting, ballet, appeared in 14 movies, came to U.S. the first time in 1959, appeared in nightclubs here, appeared as "La Orientale" in the Dallas Civic Opera production of "Thais."

This particular video has more of an emphasis on the singer who is singing a novelty song-it's very cute and fun!. Wish it actually showed her doing more, but is great to see nevertheless! Maybe we will see more of her again. I hope so.
