Wed, June 20, 2007 - 7:31 PMThanks for the info. This gives me an idea of who Serena was and what a great loss her passing away has been.

Re: Serena -video clip-teaching Turkish karsilama and more
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 8:45 AMThe day after Serena passed Artemis Mourat shared with us that she remembered first learning the Karshilama rhythm from Serena. Artie then went on to specialize in Turkish of course and Artie is who I study Turkish with and who I first learned the karshilama from.
This past weekend I danced at Le Figaro- and was really honored to be there- dancing with Serena's son''s band the Scott Wilson band- and of course they played a karshilama as a finale/exit number. It was humbling to feel it was coming full circle.
She touched and enriched so many lives and I hope her husband, Scott, Leni and their family find comfort in that.

Re: Serena -video clip-teaching Turkish karsilama and more
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 10:27 AMThe third clip is not Serena, but thank you for posting the first two.
I'm Serena's son, Scott Wilson. I put 2 more clips of Serena on youtube- "Serena in Greece" and "Serena in Egypt", under the user name- ghazikankan, a wonderful man who narated my mothers' shows in the '70's.
I thank everyone for their condolences, and a blessing on everyone who perpetuates this beautiful art form. -

Re: Serena -video clip-teaching Turkish karsilama and more
Sat, July 14, 2007 - 5:27 PMThank you so much for those clips Scott. I did not know your mother personally but she was part of my belly dance molding. I am friends with Samira and Aretmis Mourat and was fortunate to come across a 2d printing of her 1972 The Serena Technique of Belly Dancing over a year ago.
I wish I could see more of her tv show. They are truly priceless.
Much love to you and your family, Scott

Simply put, if it was not for your mother's book, it's unlikely I would be dancing today. For a poor black kid in the deep South to even think of being a dancer...yeah, exactly. It was her book, checked out of the local library and studied, in secret, in the basement of my family's house, that set me upon this path.
Although I never met her, she will always be a part of my dancing.
