Mahmoud Reda will return to the Iowa City area on July 27-29, 2007 to teach workshops in Egyptian dance. The event includes:
* Early bird arrivals: showing of the Reda movie Gharam fi al-Karnak with English subtitles on Thursday evening
* A hafla Friday night featuring performances by workshop attendees (some professionals, some students)
* Workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday
* A show of entirely professional dancers on Saturday night
The workshops will be held in an air-conditioned facility.
For those not familiar with Mahmoud Reda, he was the founder of an entire performing art in Egypt, that of the theatrical presentation of folkloric dance. He founded Reda Troupe in 1959, starred in several movies that also featured his choreography, and became known as Egypt's greatest choreographer.
Even if you normally dance barefoot, be sure to wear either dance shoes or socks to this workshop to protect the soles of your feet and your knees. Reda's dance style involves a large amount of spins, Arabesques, and other pivoting moves, and your feet need to be able to pivot freely without sticking to the floor.

Re: Mahmoud Reda in eastern Iowa July 27-29, 2007
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 4:09 PMWe didn't have a competition in Iowa. Just 2 days of workshops and two evening shows (Fri & Sat).
Here are some tips:
Biggest insight: wear dance shoes that allow your feet to pivot freely on the floor. If shoes are not an option, try socks or dance paws or similar product. Bare feet can pose a risk to your knees, as can shoes with "grippy" soles.
Hermes sandals are fine. So are ballet slippers and lyrical shoes. Dance sneakers are bad.
Bring plenty of water. He makes time for water breaks. I drank 3 liters in one day.
Read the two articles on my web site about how to memorize choreography. They'll help. See www.shira.net/advice.htm
He taught a choreography to the 9 1/2 minute song Gana El Hawa on the first day. I recommend listening to the song before the workshop if you're not familiar with it. If possible, listen to it over and over, until it starts to feel like you can anticipate what comes next. Get the version sung by Abdel Halim Hafez if you can. The version Reda uses in class is slightly different from Hafez' version (different opening), but if you familiarize yourself with Hafez's version you'll be 90% there. A big part of learning choreo is to feel how the steps match the music. If you already know the music, you'll be ahead of the game.
The workshops were fabulous. I loved how perfectly his choreography fit the music. -

Re: Mahmoud Reda in eastern Iowa July 27-29, 2007
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 9:00 PMThank you all for the information. This is great. I have passed this on to the rest of our troupe that will be taking the workshop. Our teacher will be in the competition and we will be there chearing her on. Poor thing is a bit stressed today. But she is good.
I will let you all know what I thought of the workshop. I just hope I can keep up! But what an experience it will be.

You will not be disappointed in this workshop believe me. It is mostly choreography, although he does do a bit of technique. Nothing too difficult except if you are unfamiliar with ballet type movements such as arabesques and pirouettes. What Shira says is correct, you need ballet slippers or other dance shoes to help with the turns.
He has a unique style very different from the more showy Western style I'm used to. Very lyrical and flowing. It changed my mind a great deal about what is and isn't a "bellydance" move. I wish I could go to Cairo to do the week long intensive with him and Farida Fahmy. Hopefully, he'll return to Iowa next year.
Is he judging the competition in Oahu? That would have freaked me out tremendously. I had the privelege of perfoming in front of him and it was not one of my best because I was terrified! Good luck if you are competing and enjoy the workshops.
