Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Sat, September 1, 2007 - 4:15 PMDear Aziza:
I think you were about 5 years old when your mom and I ran into each other when we were both working as temps in an office and I had this gig to dance at Lincoln Center and she made my dance skirt. I couldn't so for the life of me and sew and Johanna was kind enough to make the skirt I danced in at Lincoln Center. I danced on the same bill with Bobby's dance company and Elena and Jemela Omar were the other solo featured dancers. The first part of the program was musical...Chick Ganimian and his group and Johnny Berberian and his. It was on a Friday 13th1979 and there was a blizzard swirling about NYC and the place was sold out and there were scalpers outside selling tickets!!!..This fact I know from an Aunt who came to the performance.
That said and done, on MANY of the tunes the Feenjon Group recorded, Ali was playing OUD and Doumbeg...through the magic of technology and multiple recording techinques.. Not only that, but I remember him beginning to play oud when I was dancing at the 1964 NYC World Fair in Queens...he was self taught and NEVER EVER faked it..
My best wishes to Johanna. I have fond recollection of a very sweet and sincere woman.

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 10:48 AMDear Sabah,
I have thought of you often over the years. I played with a roll of sequin trim that went on that skirt she made for you. I will tell Johanna what you said and I'll send a "friend invite" to you shortly.
Thanks for remembering us and also the show I saw you in at Lincoln Center. Depending on the month of the show, I would have been 10 or 11 years old when she did the skirt for you and we went to the show. I have been crazy about Johnny Berberian's "purple record" for many years. It was great to see him and Chick in that show, I remember. Why do I think that I also saw "Trio Bel Canto" Greek act in that show, too. That may have been another show and I have confused the two.
Let me know if you remember a show with them, too. -

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 8:11 PMYou're right, Trio Bel Canto was on that bill too...also, if I recall, there wasn't enough of that trim to go around the full edge of the skirt...but I'm sure no one noticed....I'll be looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, August 2, 2007 - 1:13 PMThank you. I try.
Johanna gets in a snit sometimes. When she's mad at me she says. "These are my memories! I decide when they are used!"
I say, "Well, I had to listen to all that crap you and your friends spouted to me as a kid and it's my shit too!" Geez, no wonder I'm "disfunctional," Hee Hee.
Now if I could just get her to write a damn book after 50 freakin' years, I'll really be happy!
Can't wait to "comment" on the next post!
Luv, Aziza -

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, August 2, 2007 - 1:20 PMI'd love to read the book Johanna could write! There's so much us newbie dancers don't know... and the information that is out there is often very scattered in magazine articles and across the internet. Then on top of all that, you have to separate between opinion, myth, and fact. Good luck in your efforts convincing her! :-) -

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Sat, August 4, 2007 - 9:31 AMI appreciate the friendship! It's very kind. I was born into belly dance and really don't regret the joy it has brought into my life. I'm anxious to describe a lot of fine artists from my childhood because they were of a really fine caliber (certainly most of them working at time had a lot to offer) and I don't want them to be forgotten. On another level, they were also very human, and deep, interesting people with a lot of facets.
I hope to meet many of you someday! Luv, Aziza

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City

I thought I'd put this here where the dancers are. Many don't know, Ali was a dancer first. He showed me photos of him doing lifts with dancers. Ali, with a dancer held high above his head. His form was beautiful. I think that's why he could play so well for dancers, he knew what they were doing. He understood what was going on in the dancer's body.
The first time I heard Ali play was in Washington DC in 1966. I was in the dressing room of a club I was working at, and all of a sudden I heard an incredible drum playing. It was the best I've ever heard. My body couldn't stay still. His playing got into your body and took it places. He could get the most tones out of a darbuka I've ever heard, and his rhythm was amazing.
His playing was fantastic. We had an affinity due to the fact I was involved in Flamenco before getting into Raqs Sharqi, and Ali worked in Spain for a number of years before coming to the US. He was very much into the counter point type rhythm as heard in Flamenco. When he saw I was wearing Berber silver bracelets his eyes lite up.
We worked together a short time in New York, not enough.
When I got back from a visit to Morrocco in 1970, he invited me to visit and stay with his family next time I went. In 1972 I went back to Morocco and stayed with his family. He was from a very noble family. In Morrocco he would have been addressed as Mulay Ali.
Unfortunately, at the time he came to New York, there wasn't a lot of work for his type of drum playing. Most places didn't use darbuka. They had bass players instead. The music on the East Coast was more Turkish/Greek style, and drum is not as important in that music as it is in Arabic music. He played oud most of the time, but I never felt his oud playing was his forte. His way of phrasing was unparalelled.
After having heard and worked with Ali, I'm quite spoiled for any other drummer. I wish you could hear him play. He did set the stage for others, but what a loss! There are some people you meet in your life who are very special, Ali was one of those. It was a privilege to have known him.
I saw him shortly before his death. I was walking down Mac Dougal St, he was having an expresso. He smiled at me and invited me to sit and have an expresso with him. We sat quietly together, I'm sure he knew the end was near, but he went with an amazing graze and dignity. Dear Ali, rest in peace.

Wed, October 31, 2007 - 11:48 AMNakhlah,
Did you work with Ali at the "Suez" in DC? If not, what was the club? -

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 2:13 PMI worked with Ali at the Round Table in New York. Ali worked in the road show of Zorba the Greek for quite a while and he is also is on some of Miles Davis recordings as I remember. I believe he is on the Sketches of Spain album.
When I was in DC I worked at 3 clubs, can't remember the names of them now. One one was in Georgetown. I do remember the dancers though. They were Nadira, a Lebanese American, Adrianna, Greek American, Sevda High class Turkish woman who didn't want her family to know she was dancing, Yfette, Turkish woman, Soroya, Turkish student., Emra a Greek woman, Saida, Canadian woman with an extensive Ballet background, who was Ali's girlfriend.
They were all fabulous dancers. Maybe I'll write about them in another post.

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 2:24 PMGlad you enjoyed it. Did you ever hear him play? He was the most amazing drummer I've ever heard.
He was a true friend. When he had a little boutique, he sold garments I made. He also had a small restaurant where he cooked fantastic food, and a grocery store on MacDougal Street in the Village. Ali made beautiful tomato roses he put on the potato salads and such. He had a very sensitive and poetic side. -

Re: Ali Hafid = Musician New York City
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 12:03 PMAnd that's true about not a lot of work for dumbeg. Girls on bandstand between numbers did a little.
Arab musicians did work in Greektown scene, however, it's just they were more likely to be oud player like my father Samir Al-Tawil (The Istanbul, etc.) and Khamis El-Fino, the fabulous Egyptian oud player. My mother Johanna worked with Khamis at the Arabian Nights.
Oud being a heavily rhythmic type instrument made it very "complete" and it was easy to work with alone on some engagements if that was all you needed. Those Bouzouki (which I adore, too) had to have some kind of underlying base line as they sound strange alone.
