Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Fri, January 5, 2007 - 1:11 PMIf only I'd known sooner! Wish I'd heard about this in time to act on it. Sword dance is one of my specialties handed down from my Mom Johanna. A Saudi prince who was a friend of my parents gave her personalized instruction in "Al-Ard." This is what I do now in my act!

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Sat, January 6, 2007 - 9:35 AMTo Norma and Zuma,
Sword dances in all parts of Middle East were "martial" in nature and had very precise, even somewhat "scary" moves although graceful. Footwork is fast and precise. Modern dancers using swords only say, balancing on their head to "hypnotic" or romantic music (As in, "Hey baby, come a little closer and I'll chop your head off!) is not authentic sword dance from these regions. (Actually, Norma, to answer your question about is it used kinda like a cane more than it is like slow floorwork, that would be yes, the sword though is "wielded" or held (Think "Lawrence of Arabia") as if it has the use that it has, really to scare off enemies and show confidence, etc. It can be balanced on head, but it is not the main part of the dance.
Actually, Johanna's influences for sword came from two seperate sources. One was the Saudi Prince, the other was her longtime musical associate in the biz, Baba Ajdin Alslan, of "In an Egyptian Garden" and other recording fame. Baba was an Albanian born Turk who was an oud player, but had played the cornet in the Royal Albanian Marching Band under the king in his youth. During the 1933 World's Fair he accompanied a hundred or so dancers with swords. Johanna collaberated with him on a sword dance which became her signature and she was remembered for this in many cities where she performed.
In Afghanistan, they are likely to have their own touch to sword dancing, but there are many similarities between all the sword dances of the Middle East.

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Sat, January 6, 2007 - 9:36 AMOh, and if this story is set in Russian controlled, pre-Taliban Afghanistan, they very well could have had public belly dancing with swords, etc.

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Sat, January 6, 2007 - 5:03 PMAziza, my best friend's ex-husband is Afghan, and I can assure you that they almost certainly did NOT have "public belly dancing with swords etc" under the Russians, or before. Otherwise he would not have run off to Iran to enjoy booze and miniskirts as a teenager, for one thing. But also, because Afghan dancing - what I've seen of it - is perhaps a bit more like Persian dance. A lot of handkerchief waving and footwork, not so much hip.
Of course, if you can provide an *actual credible source* which demonstrates that belly dancers with swords performed in Afghanistan, other than "may have" and "very well could have" - a credible source being a person who viisted Afghanistan and saw this kind of performance, for example - I'll take it all back. -

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Sat, January 6, 2007 - 5:37 PMThe belly dancer in the story is based in Washington, DC.
But I really appreciated what you told us about raqs al ard! I've seen a troupe of male folkloric dancers perform something in Egypt that resembled the Saudi dance you described. Thanks for sharing! Are there any videos of Johanna doing this dance? -

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Mon, January 8, 2007 - 2:15 PMThe movie will be based on the book "Charlie Wilson's War," which is for the most part, a true story... I haven't read it, though. Wilson befriends a Texas divorcee who becomes his personal belly dancer, according to the Salon.com review.
The production is legit: www.imdb.com/title/tt0472062/ (the IMDB has a woman cast as "dancer" but I'm not sure she's going to be THE belly dancer)
A coloful review of the book from Salon.com: dir.salon.com/story/books...ndex_np.html -

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Tue, January 9, 2007 - 9:27 AMThe part is to play the role of Carol Shannon. It's a speaking role as well as a dancing one. According to imdb, Mayte Garcia (Prince's bellydancer) was originally cast to play Carol Shannon. But since it seems that they are recasting so late in production, something must not have worked with Mayte (who knows). Carol Shannon is an American bellydancer from Texas who Charlie Wilson brings around with him to entertain financial backers in the Middle East. I helped my friend out with her screen test and I hope she at least gets a callback. Though I read on Ansuya's tribe that she got a callback and I wouldn't be surprised if the part went to Ansuya. The movie comes out next Christmas. -

Tue, January 9, 2007 - 10:14 PMThanks for the info on Carol. I wondered what happened to her. She was my instructor in the mid- to late 70's. I would love to take from her again. Her girls were about 6 and 10 last time I saw them and they both were well on their way in the artform. -

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Thu, January 11, 2007 - 4:08 PMThere is no video of Johanna doing her "Jezayire" sword dance, but I tried to scan a pic of her doing it on stage in the late 60's but the byte size was too large and I have to try to alter it. As soon as I do I'll post. Johanna originally created the "Jezayire" sword dance for her pupil Aiyupa collaberating with Mr. Aslan. When Aiyupa retired not long after starting her pro career, Johanna added it to her act and became known for it. It was a more Balkan sword routine (done to "Jezayire" march) than the Al-Ard that the Saudi Prince taught her which is another, more complex rhythm. Johanna originally choreographed "Jezayire" with finger cymbals but changed this and made it a part of her act that didn't have zil (she did her popular scarf dancing in this same act because it didn't have zil. She had more than one "act" at the time).
I actually have video of Johanna doing her scarf dance to "Shish Kabob" at a party a couple of years back. It is going to be included in a compilation DVD of some of our performances.
I don' t do "Jezayire" myself. I created an Al-Ard for myself with her technical input.
As far as Afghanistan, I said "they very well could have," not that I knew for sure. So many countries have gone through regime changes that bring things "in" or "out" of fashion as far as what goes with religious tolerance, etc. I think Afghans are gorgeous people! Bet he's a looker!
Love, Aziza -

Re: MAJOR MOTION PICTURE LOOKING FOR BELLY DANCER
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 11:29 PMThank you for the info. I could not make it to LA, my car was in the shop and my sword skills do leave some thing to be desired : .(.... But if you are looking for a great book on the 10 year Afgan/Soviet conflict read Ghost War. The book is superb. It looks at American/CIA invovment in the war and the long term impact of that involvement. Great book.
