I have tried to dig information about gorgeous Nadia Gamal from Internet but without much results. Does anybody know any good site about her: I would love to write an article about her dancing to our local dance magazine but without backgroud the task seems to be almost impossible...

try different spellings, I know Samia Gamal is spelled Samya and a couple of other different ways. There are several videos available about Nadia, including, I thought, a documentary.

Ha! I've been on the hunt for Nadia Gamal information these past two weeks also! You're right, there isn't hardly any info on the net about her.

Specifically, I'm trying to find the music she used in her 1989 video, Nadia Gamal Dance Workshop. No one seems to know what it is. The video has no musical credits and searching the net has turned up a big fat zero. ...phooey.

There is a DVD out called "Nadia Gamal The Legend", available on maqam.com. It is a performance video, but there is a biography (half a dozen paragraphs or so) printed on the back jacket of the DVD.

You might also consider contacting Phaedra, in NYC... her website is: www.phaedradance.com/ I would bet that Phaedra even took (at least) a class or two with Nadia. She might have access to some historical info that would help - like a back issue of Arabesque Magazine that you could purchase. :-)

    Hope that helps!

I saw footage of Nadia Gamal dancing on Ibrahim Farrah's video: Rare Glimpses: Dances from the Middle East vol 1. I thought it was nice, very 60-70's style. More review of this video (the author thought otherwise):

Also, her musician was Setrak Sarkissian.
Lastly, Samara's Bizarre on eBay is selling "Nadia Gamal" costumes, some of them ORIGINALLY owned by her according to the seller. Perhaps the seller has more biographical information on Nadia...?:

Unfortunately, the "information" on the DVD cover contains errors. It disagrees with what Nadia said in an interview for the April 1987 issue of the Lebanese magazine Scoop.

For example, in the interview Nadia said her father was Greek and her mother was Italian, but the video cover says vice versa. In the interview, Nadia said her family moved to Lebanon in 1952 right after the Egyptian revolution, but the video cover says it was 1957. I’m inclined to view the magazine interview as being more credible than what the video cover says because the magazine uses Nadia herself as its source, and these discrepancies lead me to doubt the other assertions on the video cover.

I had a music lesson with a Lebanese composer yesterday, Fouad Harraka

        www.myspace.com/fouadharraka

I show him a dvd I had of an Amateur arabic band and dancer. He mentioned that he played violin for one of the best dancers who past away years ago. I wasn't sure who he might been talking about, the only Lebanese dancer I know is Amani and he told me it was Nadia Gamal.

I think next time I see him I'll try and milk him for more information.

          Ooh, yes, more details, please!

A guy who used to work for me said that Nadia was his neighbor in Beirut and used to babysit him occasionally. He even brought in a picture of the two of them together! It's a small world...

I used to work with a derbeke player who used to work with Nadia Gamal. He wasn't the best derbeke player in the world but he was my favorite to work with because he would actually follow me when I danced. He knew how to play for a dancer. What a difference working with a drummer who works with you and not against against you. We worked together for so long he could anticipate my every move.

Check this out, Hollywood Music Center is selling Nadia's workshop now:

I didn't know they had rights to this, I thought Phaedra did. Do you think she sold them rights?

Hi Shems! You're right, Phaedra holds the copyright. She worked with Mher to make this DVD happen, and HMC has a contract with Phaedra to sell the DVD and distribute it. (And I got her OK to post this.)

Does that mean she's going to work with them to release some of the other footage that she has hidden away? I've heard she has some gems that almost nobody's seen. I would even love a shot at getting Rare Glimpses on DVD.

        :-)

There are some projects in the works, not necessarily with Peko... my lips are sealed on the details. ;-)

It would be so great to have Bobby's material more readily available. Just before the Fahtiem workshop last night, one of my fellow students was asking how I knew Fahtiem. I said that we both used to study with Ibrahim Farrah. My fellow student said, "Who??" Very depressing.....
