How many of you own Eddie "The Sheik" Kochak volumes 3, 5, & Golden Hits? The beautiful dancer on the covers is my teacher, friend, and mentor Habeeba, www.habeebas.com.
"Habeeba began performing in 1960, and began instructing in 1971 when she created Habeeba's Dance of the Arts, Inc. Hers was the first belly dance school in Ohio and she is an inductee in the American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Hall of Fame".
I feel so lucky to learn from a true legend in the Dance!

Fri, January 19, 2007 - 8:49 AMEddie Kochak sells cd's out of his personal website. He is still at his old address on Pierrepont St. in Brooklyn. I think there is a link to his site off of bellydanceny.com under "music," etc. He has an order form you can print.

Habeeba
Fri, January 19, 2007 - 12:51 PMI remember when I moved to Columbus in 1982 I looked for a teacher to continue my belly dancing education. I saw Habeeba listed in the yellow pages, but I ended up NOT going to her classes because she was w-a-y over on the opposite side of town. (I lived on the northwest side of Columbus, just north of the border with Upper Arlington, along the Olentangy River.) I tried taking Salome's classes at OSU for a while, but that also was too difficult for me to get to.
I know I have at least one of the old record albums with Habeeba on it. I haven't listened to my Eddie Kochak music in a long, long time. The very, very first belly dance routine I ever learned in a beginner class was on an Eddie Kochak record. -

Eddie Kochak x-post
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 4:28 PMwww.eddiekochak.com/index.htm
Eddie Kocak created a genre known as "Ameribaba" ~ a collection of Arabic/Armenian/Turkish/Greek tunes with a unique "over here" rather than "over there" feel. He played a major role in the NYC music and dance scene. Often he would name songs after his favorite dancers. Many of those NYC dancers such as Ibrihim Farrah, Phaedra, Jemela Omar and Saroya Melik to name a few, graced the covers of his albums.

Re: Habeeba & Eddi Kochak
Mon, January 22, 2007 - 6:23 AMMy first teacher used George Abdo and Eddie Kochak albums to teach.
She had one of those record players like you see in schools back in the
early 1970s and she'd scratch that needle across the album to the next
song! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKK my ears!!!!!!!!! :) -

Re: Habeeba & Eddi Kochak
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 4:41 PMMy mother taught to a lot of Eddie Kochak albums (among others for she was in business with Baba Ajdin Aslan of "Balkan Records.") and "drummed" him up a lot of sales (no pun intended!). There's no telling how many sales he got out of her students the year we went back to her hometown of Charleston, WV and we taught 500 students at their YWCA in their large gymnasium. We stayed a year and made a killing. The students were lovely women and a joy to teach on top of that. Back then most students really lovely women, not many difficult types. We were there the year of Watergate, 1973. We went back to NYC in 1974 when I was six. As soon as we went back, my Mom said, "Get ready! We're going to see Eddie Kochak!" I got excited and thought she meant "Kojak" actore Telly Savales (I adored that Greek!) We arrived at Eddie's office and I was floored to see an Arab dude with plenty of hair. I said, "I thought you were "Kojak" and I was going to get a lollipop. He gave me a Joyva sesame candy to appease me. I'll never forget that day! -

Re: Habeeba & Eddi Kochak
Tue, February 6, 2007 - 10:41 AMI am in planning stages of a tour across the U.S. Seminars/Shows and Clubs. Talk to me sometime about your area. I will post trivia here and there but there is too much to go into in this format.
Johanna and I are also working on a coffee table book about dance that will be packed with photos from her dance careers as well as photos of other famous dancers. She and her first husband were photography enthusiasts and took many candid shots in the clubs.
You'll hear more about it soon. More pics will be posted soon!
