Re: vintage bellydance videos
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 9:46 AMHow 'vintage' are you thinking? Are you looking for performances of American or Egyptian dancers?
There's a wonderful series of Egyptian dancers called "Stars of Egypt" 5 videos... but they're pricy.
There's also a compilation DVD with many of these dancers (Samia Gamal, Taheyya Karioka, Nagwa and Fifi) that sort of spans the ages. From the 40's to the 70's I believe.
I'm not sure about how 'vintage' American dancers will be. The oldest thing I have is from the 70's from Raja. Personally I'd love to see more American dancing from the 60's and earlier... but can't find anything that's not someone’s personal tape in Beta :-P -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Tue, December 6, 2005 - 10:47 PMYeh... you have some egyptean movies on DVD with dancers like Samia Gamal. They are also available in the USA. One is called 'The fabulous Samia Gamal' and can still be found on amazon.com.
Aside from that its really hard to find. And tapes are so often copied in the bellydance world that they are most likely in a bad quality. I have Mona Said on tape from the 70's. These are in very bad shape. They are copied all over through the islamitic world.
Its funny... a lot of 70's movies have bellydancers in them. Like the James Bond movies. -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Fri, December 23, 2005 - 9:55 PMThere is a bar around here that shows old black and white video, which includes bellydancing, cartwheels, partial nudity (but still, it doesn't appear to be slimy), weird stage tricks, etc. all in one show. It's definitely "older" but I don't know what year.
The dancers appear to be American, and this isn't traditional stuff at all, in fact some bellydancers may hate it...but I am glued to the screen everytime I am there, and would love to find a copy. It reminds me of like old pin-up girl stuff, but is very fascinating. I'm wondering where these women learned to bellydance, who from, where, when was it, did their teacher object to their performances (which at the time I'm sure seemed "too revealing" although to me it looks fun, and these days doesn't look so bad compared to all the junk and straight up porn that Americans see today even in public places)...etc.?
Short skirts and granny panty underwear, and an occassional topless or near-topless woman back then seemed "really bad"...but today, I look at those videos and think that there's something empowering about the fact that those women were able to step beyond "being good little housewives and 'Obeying the man'" and actually do something like reveal their granny panties.
I feel that such videos have an important spot on the time line of women's history and the societal changes women have gone through, and I'd like to find some copies to watch.
I haven't yet contacted the bar to inquire, but should do so.
Anyway, that is not the "vintage bellydance videos" I was originally looking for, but thought about it recently and decided to post it to see what other people think about it, if other people have seen such video or know where to get it, etc.
I'm looking for any older bellydance videos...whether it be footage of a tribe in another country...video from Egypt, video from Turkey, or American videos which happen to be from performances from years ago...anything that is not the new, recent, American bellydance stuff.
The further back in time, the better, but anything recorded before 1970 would be great. I'd still enjoy stuff from after 1970, but I am really into the idea of watching older stuff if possible.
Zenobia suggested "The fabulous Samia Gamal"...but unless I'm wrong (which I could be), I think that one was recorded fairly recently.
I'd still like to see it, though, so thanks for the suggestion! -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Sat, December 24, 2005 - 7:36 AMHave you tried ME 'grocery' stores, the ones that sell a little bit of everything? Many of them had movies to sell I guess, or rent, maybe they'd be interested in getting rid of them now, you could ask for ones that have dancers - worth a shot. Or just network from there & let them know you're looking to buy old movies with dancers. -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Sun, December 25, 2005 - 1:03 PMGood luck!
I remember an Egyptian (I guess!) movie I got, it's a scream; you can just about follow the plot without even knowing the language. Samia Gamal's in it, where she gets auctioned off - she dances down these long steps, etc. really neat -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 8:25 AMAmethyst, you're in luck -- some of the earliest stuff is free and online! Go to:
memory.loc.gov/ammem/
And search for "Belly Dance". The top 3 items are early archival footage of dancers from the edge of the 20th Century.
I agree with you, that more of an interest should be shown in that era of bellydance you initially referenced, just as I've hit on our lack of knowledge of pre-Casino Opera work, such as the videos above. For you, I’d recommend LOOKING FOR LITTLE EGYPT:
www.amazon.com/gp/product...786-0121724
Which details much of the early American history of our form. With all the fights about “fusion” and authenticity and sexuality/sensuality in the dance form, it’s amazing how little of this information is known, even to this day.
I might be able to dig up more, if you’re interested? We can move up into the Casino Opera era of the early 20's, but you'll have to buy some rare/costly videos to do it... -

Tue, December 27, 2005 - 12:17 AMFantastic...!!!!
Thanks for that link with those video's. I wish I could find some video material of Mata Hari... I will see what the Amazon.com DVD has to offer....
*going there now*

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 5:34 PMI'd be interested in knowing more about the Casino Opera footage, even if it's tremendously expensive...
(and I completely second the recommendation for Looking for Little Egypt, an excellent and well researched resource!)

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 5:33 PM'the Fabulous Samia Gamal' might have a recent release date on it, but the footage is all from the 40s and 50s. Another great dvd to check out is 'The Legends of Belly Dance' which features more Samia, Tahiya Cariocca, and many other stars of the golden age of Egyptian cinema. There's one or two clips from the 1970s, but the rest are really the golden age stuff.

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 8:48 AMAmethyst, that sounds like Teaserama. I have it and it's really fun to watch. There are other videos from the same company that are very similar.
Does this look familiar?
www.youtube.com/watch
The problem with finding vintage bellydance video is that it's pre-camcorder, and to convert the 8mm film to digital is expensive. My mum has some glorious old footage taken with a movie camera, and one day I hope to get it done.
I have a few pix in my profile of my mum with some dancers from the early 80s.

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 4:45 PMThe following site has a large selection of Arabic movie DVDs - just be careful 'cause some of the DVDs are in PAL/SECRAM (European) and some in NTSC (U.S.).
I ordered several last month and am really enjoying them.
They have Samia Gamal in: "I Love You", "Love of a Life Time"; "A Glass and a Cigarette"; Afrita Hanem (The Genie Lady) and "Don't Tell Anyone"
Taheya Carioca in "Shore of Love" and lots of Oum Kalthoum movies too!

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Sun, February 18, 2007 - 10:55 PMOther folks have already suggested some great compilations of dance scenes from Egyptian movies (the Fabulous Samia Gamal, Stars of Egypt, Legends of Belly Dance.)
If you have any interest in seeing the dance scenes appear within the context of the full-length movies, so you can see how they fit with the plots, here are my favorite sources for classic Arab movies with English subtitles:
www.fineartfilm.com - It's in the UK, but they ship fast and accept PayPal, really convenient, plus they have a huge selection of goodies!
www.aramovies.com - The web site makes it look like they have a huge selection, but ordering from them is iffy because they're out of a lot of the titles, and they don't give you any indication at all of when they expect more. If they happen to have it in stock, they'll ship pretty quickly, but if they don't have it in stock, don't hold your breath because they probably won't bother to notify you when they do get it.
www.arabfilm - I've had good experience ordering from them. They offer a lot of their titles on Netflix and Amazon, too.
www.rashid.com - They don't overlap much at all with fineartfilm or arabfilm, but they do have some overlap with aramovies. But unlike aramovies, they seem to keep the titles in stock.
If you want details on which movies are available from each of the above, see this other thread here on tribe: tribes.tribe.net/shira/thr...49f4ab6331

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Wed, February 28, 2007 - 10:49 PMHossam Ramzy's stars of Egypt series has some great old footage:
www.hossamramzy.com/videos/stars.htm
Sausan has some of this same older footage and more:
www.sausanacademy.com/suq.htm
Jodette sells some stuff, some it I'm guessing is vintage, you'll have to ask her:
onsmartpages.com/jodettesb...ds1videos/
Speaking of, whatever happened to Saut wa Soora? Are they in business anymore? They used to be a good place to get videos.
Ebay sometimes has some treasures if you keep your eyes open.
Rashid.com has a lot of old movies for sale, and they are excellent at answering any questions you have and helping you find stuff. Get the dvd titled "VARIOUS ARTISTS - ORIENTAL BELLY DANCE DVD", it is a compilation of vintage footage.
I second Morocco's videos as some pretty cool old footage:
www.casbahdance.org/
Also for more ethnic stuff, Aisha Ali's has a couple great videos:
www.aisha-ali.com/
Also if you can get your hands on Irahim Farrah's videos (which can be tricky), they are great, especially rare glimpses.
www.ibrahimfarrah.com/
some other good one's have been mentioned. -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Sun, March 4, 2007 - 6:58 AMId like to see American dancers from the 60`s and early 70`s, Id also Love to see Turkish bellydancers from that time period too.
Anyone know of any on film? (and not the not the `80s turkish stuff, please!) -

Re: vintage bellydance videos
Mon, March 5, 2007 - 8:06 AMThe movie Son of Sinbad, which was made in 1955, has a wonderful dance scene near the beginning featuring Nejla Ates, a Turkish dancer. I highly recommend it.
The movie The Brass Bottle, which was made in 1964, has a performance by Lulu Porter that's fun.
The movie From Russia with Love has a dance scene by Lisa Guiraut.
Of course, in all these cases the dance scene is somewhat brief, not a full-length performance of the sort you'd expect to see in a club.
