Hi Shems!!! My eyes popped out of my head when I saw her picture!! This is what I know about her.......she was a very popular teacher and performer in the early 70's...she may have started in California, but she ended up here in Portland, OR! She is from Jordan, and she was the gorgeous Nemra Khan's instructor....from what I hear, she's in her 70's now and living in Lake Oswego! I would give anything to learn more about her and see more pictures, too!!! She was beautiful!!

    Hi,
I am interested in a teacher in Portland, Oregon who currently teaches a style of belly dance similar to that of Badawiya. I saw her as a child and she was amazing. And what is the name of the style of belly dance she taught?

      Dear Laurie,
Badawia was one of my main instructors for the first 5 years of my dance life. She was an American style belly dancer with heavy Arab folkoric overtones and she was from Jordan, so there was a strong Arab accent in her dance. She was stunningly beautiful and passionate, even in her every day life, even when she was tearing out walls in her house in Portland, etc. I followed her around and occasionally went to stay with her or brought her up to Spokane where I live, or she would occasionally stop to spend the night on her way to other places. More than even movement. she taught me about "Arabness" in the dance, that it was a cultural offering as well as an entertainment. The last time I was in contact with her, she was till in Portland and married to Dr. Bill, and American guy who is really sweet. Bill and she used to spend a lot of time in Mexico, where he was active with one of those "Drs without Borders organizations. Her name is Wedad , (means "loveable" in Arabic). She used to tell wonderful stories about her family in Jordan and how she came to be in America. I have warm memories of staying at her house and seeing her dance in Grecian Gardens and Athens West, (to Greek music.... there did not seem to be Arab bands in Portland at the time...) Where can I see her photo that was mentioned here? I have one of her posters and her cover from the old Habibi Magazine and I cherish them, along with the personal photos I have of her.
      Regards,
      A'isha

        PS:
Like many Arabs born in her time, Wedad did not know her exact age, but she decided she was a Cancer, born in July and that her age was 11 years older than me. That would put her in her late 60s. The last time I saw her, about 15 years ago, she was as beautiful as ever.

I never bet Badawiya, but she was my major teacher's teacher. So her name got invoked a LOT when I was learning. I swear I can spot any other dancer with that 'lineage' immediately.
